THE DEFINITIVE EXPLAINER

What is Answer Engine Optimization?

LAST UPDATED — JULY 22, 2026

Answer Engine Optimization, defined

Answer Engine Optimization (AEO) is the practice of structuring a business's website and public presence so AI assistants — ChatGPT, Claude, Perplexity, Gemini, and Google AI Overviews — can read, verify, and cite it when recommending businesses. Where SEO earns a ranking on a results page, AEO earns a place inside the answer itself.

The distinction matters because the answer is the shortlist. When a buyer asks "who should I hire to rebuild my website in Metro Detroit," the engine replies with a handful of names, reasons to trust each, and often contact details. There is no page two. Businesses the engine cannot verify are not ranked lower — they are absent.

01AEO VS SEO

How is AEO different from SEO?

SEO optimizes for a ranked list of links; AEO optimizes for a synthesized answer. SEO competes for position on a page the buyer still has to read. AEO competes for inclusion in a recommendation the buyer simply acts on. The two overlap — good SEO is the floor — but AEO adds requirements SEO never had.

02HOW ENGINES DECIDE

How do AI engines decide who to recommend?

AI engines recommend businesses they can verify. They cross-check a business's own claims against independent signals: review volume and recency, consistent name–phone–location data across the web, structured data the engine can parse, third-party profiles, and content clear enough to quote. Businesses that assert much but verify little get skipped.

  1. 01Entity clarity

The engine must resolve who you are: one consistent name, phone, service area, and identity across your site, Google Business Profile, and every directory that mentions you.

  2. 02Verifiable trust signals

Reviews, ratings, credentials, and profiles the engine can check on third-party platforms — not testimonials you publish about yourself.

  3. 03Machine-readable structure

Schema.org structured data that states your services, prices, and area in a form engines parse directly, matched exactly by what's visible on the page.

  4. 04Citable passages

Self-contained answers on your site that an engine can lift verbatim: what you do, what it costs, where you work. Vague marketing prose is unquotable.

03REVIEWS AS AI TRUST SIGNALS

Why do reviews matter so much to AI engines?

Review volume and recency are among the strongest trust signals AI engines weigh, because reviews are third-party, timestamped, and hard to fabricate at scale. A business with many recent Google reviews gives an engine ongoing, verifiable evidence that it is real, active, and delivering — which is exactly what an engine needs before attaching its own credibility to a recommendation.

This is why Dobsonyx builds review generation directly into its AEO strategy. Revyx (Beta) automates the ask: every closed client receives a review request with timed follow-up — no sentiment screening, no incentives, in line with Google's review policies. The rating itself is earned by the work; the pipeline just makes sure completed work turns into public, machine-verifiable proof.
